Gov. Candidates Using State Offices To Campaign From

RALEIGH, N.C. — A state investigation has found evidence the offices of state Treasurer Richard Moore and Lieutenant Governor Beverly Perdue used government resources while running for governor.

State Auditor Les Merritt released his reviews Thursday. Both candidates had asked Merritt to investigate the other after one of Moore’s top aides used a state computer and someone else’s name to seek public records from Perdue’s office.

Merritt’s review found four employees in the treasurer’s office who had dozens of political documents on their state computers. The part-time employees also worked part-time as paid volunteers in Moore’s campaign.

Merritt discovered Perdue’s campaign had installed and paid for a private Internet connection in the lieutenant governor’s office for her employees’ personal use and campaign activity.

Merritt said the actions in both offices were inappropriate but didn’t call them illegal.
