Narrowed Field Gets Ugly From

Now that both Democrats and Republicans are down to two candidates, things seem to be getting ugly.

On the GOP side, Mitt Romney and John McCain will debate on CNN tonight at 8 p.m. According to the Associated Press, “the two have turned up the verbal attacks over the past few days.”

Romney has called McCain dishonest, liberal, an economic novice and a lover of tax hikes. He sharply criticized McCain’s Senate record on immigration, campaign finance laws and energy. McCain in turn ridiculed Romney’s shift on matters such as abortion rights, and said Romney had supported a premature withdrawal from Iraq.

Things aren’t much friendlier on the now-narrowed Democratic side. Also according to the AP, Obama has attacked Clinton as a “calculating and divisive figure.”

Obama said that Clinton has sided with the GOP on issues like trade, national security and the role of lobbyists in politics. He also painted Clinton as a calculating, divisive figure and suggested that having her as the Democratic nominee would unite the Republican party against her.

In response, the Clinton campaign says Obama is abandoning his pledge to run a positive campaign by making misleading attacks. In a Web message, the Clinton campaign posted a passage from Obama’s book, “Audacity of Hope,” and suggests he’s now contradicting what he wrote about political campaigning.
