WASHINGTON – Democrats Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton were still vying for delegates Tuesday as McCain won enough to claim his party’s nomination for president, the AP reported.
Clinton won Rhode Island, while Obama won at least eight delegates in Vermont. Texas was still up for grabs late Tuesday night, but reports indicated Clinton won Ohio.
In all, Obama and Clinton competed for a total of 370 delegates in four states Tuesday.
According to the AP, McCain surpassed the 1,191 delegates needed to secure the nomination by winning delegates in Texas, Ohio, Vermont and Rhode Island. He also picked up new endorsements from about 30 party officials who will automatically attend the convention and can support whomever they choose.
