RALEIGH, N.C. – Senate changes to a financial institution bailout appear unlikely to convince many of North Carolina’s nine congressmen who voted against the package to now embrace it.
The House is expected to consider the proposal Friday, now that the Senate has added some tax provisions designed to win over earlier ‘no’ votes.
But on the eve of the anticipated House vote, several North Carolina congressmen said the changes aren’t enough.
A spokeswoman for GOP Rep. Walter Jones said the Senate plan, “at its core,” is just like the House measure which he helped defeat Monday on a 228-205 vote.
And on the other side, Democratic Rep. Mel Watt earlier he doesn’t think any of the changes will cause him to withdraw his earlier support for the package. On Friday, he said he would support the bill.
“The rescue portion of this bill is the same as the bill that I voted for when it failed in the House, except that FDIC insurance coverage has been increased from $100,000 to $250,000. I support this change because it will help stabilize the economy and banks by addressing customer fears that have resulted in “runs” on a number of banks.
The other parts of the bill which have been added by the Senate are all things I have previously supported and voted for in bills that the House already passed. When the House passed these bills, we fully paid for them. The Senate’s failure to pay for the cost of these measures concerns me. But we have no choice but to try to address the credit and economic crisis that we are in the middle of. While I would prefer to pay for these measures, I am not provided that option in this bill.”
Congressman Patrick McHenry would not say whether he would vote for the Senate bill. He released the following statement:
“The substance of the bailout bill in the Senate is the same as the House bill I voted against. It’s clear that action must be taken to get the credit markets functioning again, but this bill is not the answer. I encourage the Democrats to offer a new bill in the House that can bring lasting stability to our markets while protecting the taxpayers. I have offered constructive ideas on how to improve this legislation, achieve the stated goal of certainty in the financial markets — and protect the taxpayer from negative consequences.”
