RALEIGH, N.C. – The Legislature isn’t going to make a deadline to get a final budget for North Carolina state government approved by early next week.
The House Appropriations Committee agreed Thursday to a temporary spending measure that directs how government agencies keep operating after the new fiscal year begins Wednesday.
Rep. Mickey Michaux of Durham County said House and Senate members won’t meet over the weekend to negotiate a two-year budget because a tax package has yet to be worked out.
The temporary plan should get a full House vote Monday night. It would then return to the Senate, which approved a similar version earlier this week.
The House version would give lawmakers two extra weeks to negotiate. The Senate plan was open-ended.

Thank you for setting a deadline for the extended budget negotiations. (Hope that can be passed) Schools are desperately in need of knowing how to plan for next year. I am also glad to hear a tax package is being worked out.
I teach high school and thought about the difficulty of convincing students work must be in on time. I do understand that sometimes extensions are necessary, both for my students and for the legislature, and for teachers. Two weeks, however, ought to allow for a tax package both chambers can agree to. J. Allen, NBCT
