Allred Pleads Guilty to Speeding

Tags: ,

RALEIGH, N.C. – Former state Rep. Cary Allred has been fined $500 for speeding on the interstate on the way to a session of the North Carolina Legislature.

A court clerk in Orange County said Thursday that Allred pleaded guilty to driving 102 mph in a 65 mph zone. The plea he agreed to Wednesday also required him to pay court costs of $130. A reckless driving count was dismissed.

The Alamance County Republican resigned in June following a probe into his conduct during a Monday night session of the House in April. On the way to Raleigh that day, a trooper stopped him near where Interstates 40 and 85 split in Orange County.

A trooper initially let Allred go with a warning, but he was cited four days later.

GRAHAM, N.C.  – A county commissioner will replace former state Rep. Cary Allred in the North Carolina House.

The Times-News of Burlington reported Alamance County Republican leaders chose Dan Ingle as Allred’s successor over two other candidates Monday night. The nomination now goes to Gov. Beverly Perdue, who is required by law to appoint Ingle to the House seat.

Allred resigned from the Legislature last week following a review of his conduct during a floor session in April. Allred was accused of drinking before speeding to work and embracing a teenage female page. Allred said he did nothing unethical.

Ingle is an Elon University police detective who received 17 of the 24 votes cast by the Alamance County’s GOP executive committee. Ingle was ultimately approved by acclamation.

A North Carolina state House member accused by colleagues of embracing a teenage female page inappropriately says he will leave the Legislature after the current year’s session ends.

GOP Rep. Cary Allred of Alamance County told The Times-News of Burlington on Thursday he’ll retire from the House by Sept. 1.

A legislative ethics committee last week received a report from the House sergeant-at-arms collecting accounts about Allred’s actions in the House chamber April 27. The report made no recommendations on Allred’s fate.

Allred has said he did nothing wrong and the page was a longtime friend of his family. He also acknowledged that he had one drink before driving to Raleigh and getting stopped for speeding before that evening’s House floor meeting. Allred said he was never impaired.

Republican Rep. Cary Allred of Alamance County said Thursday he was stabbed in the back by fellow Republicans and would switch next week from GOP to unaffiliated.

A report by the House sergeant-at-arms released Wednesday quoted several Republicans describing what they observed as Allred embracing the 17-year-old page. One Republican compared it to a “gruesome bear hug.”

Allred said he had one drink on April 27 before being stopped by a trooper on his way to Raleigh. He was cited for going 102 mph in a 65-mph zone.

The report makes no recommendations. The Legislative Ethics Committee will decide whether Allred receives more scrutiny.
