RALEIGH, N.C. – Democrat Rep. Bob Etheridge has defeated Republican challenger Dan Mansell to win his seventh term representing the state’s 2nd Congressional District.
The Associated Press called the race for Etheridge based on an analysis of voter interviews, conducted for the AP by Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International.
Etheridge also beat Mansell two years ago with 67 percent of the vote. Etheridge has a moderate record, supporting both the financial market bailout package and an energy bill that would have allowed states to permit some offshore drilling. Mansell took conservative positions on taxation and national defense, but he struggled to draw financial backing.
The district encircles Raleigh and includes Franklin, Johnston, Harnett and Sampson counties.
